Meet Environmental Engineering Student Raquel Shapiro
As a junior environmental engineering major, Raquel Shapiro has benefited from the robust instruction and hands-on research opportunities offered by the School of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as from leadership roles in several campus organizations.
Why Rutgers?
I chose to attend Rutgers University for its renowned reputation, academic excellence, and exceptional opportunities in the School of Engineering (SoE), as well as its vibrant campus life and convenient access to major cities like New York.
What drew you to CEE?
I am drawn to the SOE's environmental engineering program, where I am acquiring essential skills to address environmental challenges. Collaborating with like-minded future engineers, I aim to create practical, sustainable solutions, and make a meaningful impact in this vital field.
What do you like about the faculty?
Their expertise, approachability, enthusiasm, and dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Have you been involved in any special research or other projects?
This summer I had the opportunity to participate in research in collaboration with Associate Professor Efthymios Nikolopoulos in his hydrology and remote sensing group. As part of his team, I was involved in collecting and analyzing data for water-resource planning and flood risk management in New Jersey.
What about extracurricular activities?
I proudly serve as the president of the Gift of Life Rutgers Chapter, where our goal is to expand the bone marrow registry to find matches for those battling leukemia and other blood disorders. As a Jew on campus, I am involved with the Chabad’s outreach team and am Hillel’s Israel on Campus coalition fellow. I am also an active member of the American Society of Civil and Environmental Engineers.
What do you hope to do in the future?
In addition to obtaining my BS degree, I am committed to pursuing a MS in environmental engineering. My aspiration is to become an environmental engineer dedicated to finding solutions for the world's pressing water and pollution crises.
What advice do you have for future students?
Embrace college life, find a balance between your studies and self-care, reach out for help when you need it. With dedication and resilience, you can do anything you put your mind to!
